Over 100 staff from Tesco Mobile and Tesco Telecoms joined the staff and volunteers at the Letchworth Centre for Healthy Living on 8th September 2010 to enable a series of projects to be completed at the charity's Rosehill Hospital site.
The day was part of Tesco's commitment to local community initiatives. Staff left their desks for the day, accepted the challenge and spent the day digging, clearing and building.
The project between Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile staff and the Letchworth Centre was part of an extensive programme of projects needed by the charity to enhance its own facilities and to extend the work of the Growing People Horticultural Therapy programme based at Rosehill.
The Centre has for a quarter of a century run programmes of stress-reducing and health-enhancing classes alongside a complementary therapy clinic and large counselling and psychotherapy service. Its partner organisation, Growing People, provides support for people recovering from severe mental health problems and from head injuries.
The projects included clearing an area to provide parking for disabled people, building a perimeter fence to create a large vegetable and fruit-growing area, clearing scrub for a polytunnel and creating a safer car park.
Roberta Meldrum, Director of the Letchworth Centre, commented, "it was a fantastic day, successful beyond all our hopes. The Tesco teams' work will benefit everyone who uses the site for a long time to come."
Lance Batchelor, Chief Executive Officer of Tesco Mobile and Tesco Telecoms said: "Tesco is committed to being a good neighbour and we were delighted to have the chance to support a local charity close to our head office. Through Tesco we are involved in a lot of fundraising to support our charity of the year and other great causes. However it was fantastic to see the whole team work together to make a real difference to a local community initiative that benefits thousands of people in the region."
Get Connected presented each member of Tesco Telecoms and Mobile team with a certificate at the end of their mission to acknowledge their valued contribution to the North Hertfordshire community.
